CORE COURSES
English
English 10-1, 20-1, 30-1
Students critically study a variety of texts – novels, plays, poetry, movies. Students also
write and create a variety of their own pieces. English 30-1 is the course required for entrance to university as well as many colleges & technical institutions. (5 credits)
English 10-2, 20-2, 30-2
Students focus on practical English skills. These courses are required for entrance to
certain programs in colleges, technical and trade schools. (5 credits)

Social
Social 10-1, 20-1, 30-1
Students critically assess global economic, social and political trends to become informed and active citizens. Social Studies 30-1 is the course required for entrance to university as well as many colleges & technical institutions. (5 credits)
Social 10-2, 20-2, 30-2
Students study similar issues and topics as students in 10-1, 20-1, 30-1 program but in less depth. (5 credits)

Mathematics
Mathematics 10C, 20-1, 30-1 and Math 31
These courses emphasize mathematical theory and the testing of mathematical hypothesis. Algebra skills are a key component in the courses. Math 30-1 is required for entrance to many post-secondary programs. (5 credits)
Mathematics 10C, 20-2, 30-2
These courses are designed to look at mathematical processes, models and skills where technology is an integral part of the course. Math 30-2 is accepted in a limited number
of post-secondary programs. (5 credits)
Mathematics 10-3, 20-3, 30-3
These courses focus on the students’ understanding of how mathematical concepts are involved in their daily life, business and industry. These courses are accepted as entrance requirements for certain trades.

Science
Science 10, 20, 30
These courses help students understand and apply the fundamental concepts and skills common to biology, chemistry, and physics. Science 30 is accepted for entrance into many post-secondary institutions. (5 credits)
Biology, Chemistry, Physics 20, 30
These courses are intended for students planning to specialize in an area of science. (5 credits)
Science 14, 24
These courses help students understand how scientific concepts are involved in their daily life, business and industry. (5 credits)

Career & Life Management 20 (Gr. 11 & 12 only)
This course provides students with the opportunity to develop and practice skills needed for dealing with a variety of issues and situations, living independently and planning a career. (5 credits)

Physical Education
Next year we have 3 different Physical Education Courses available to the grade 10, 11 and 12 students. Please read through the course descriptions before registering.
P.E. 10 – GIRLS – 5 credits
- this course is available to all grade 9 girls entering high school next year.
- themes will include volleyball, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, badminton, curling, tennis, archery, pilates, yoga, weight training. Each unit will have a fitness component, technical component and game play component.
P.E. 10 – BOYS – 5 credits
- this course is available to all grade 9 boys entering high school next year.
- *focus will be on creating a cooperative environment with leadership, fair play and skill development as major components. Themes will include a variety of team and individual activities with fitness as an incorporated outcome.
P.E. 20/30 – Co-Ed – 5 credits
- this course will be a continuation of the P.E. 10 program. It is geared for the student that likes the variety of team sports, individual sports and fitness.
- *many of the same themes that are covered in P.E 10 will be revisited in this course.
P.E. 20/30 – BOYS – 5 credits
- this course will be a continuation of the P.E. 10 program.
- *focus will be on creating a cooperative environment with leadership, fair play and skill development as major components. Themes will include a variety of team and individual activities with fitness as an incorporated outcome.
P.E. 20/30 – FIT PIT – Co-Ed– 5 credits
- this course will utilize the weight training and cardio equipment.

COMPLEMENTARY COURSES
2020-21 BCHS Career & Technology Studies (CTS) Information (2)
These courses offer students a chance to broaden their knowledge by studying a variety of subjects. Some complementary courses help students build career based skills.
Career and Technology Studies (CTS)
These courses emphasize learning through doing and include components of career awareness and career development. Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced Levels are offered in each area. Credit for the first year of apprenticeship may be obtained. Each module is one credit. The following CTS programs are available:

- Mechanics
- Sports Fitness
- Sports Broadcasting

OFF-CAMPUS EDUCATION
Barrhead Composite offers a number of courses in which students can receive high school credit for learning opportunities outside of the classroom. The most common one is Work Experience, but there is also RAP (Registered Apprenticeship Program), Green Certificate and Workplace Practicum.
Students must apply for off-campus education. See Mrs. Bondarchuk for the appropriate application.

Number of credits available: 30
Prerequisite:
- HCS3000 or Workplace Readiness 10-4
- CTR1010 for second placement
- CTR3010 for third placement
Application fee: no cost
Application deadline: June 1 for students who want to do summer work experience.

Prerequisite:
- HCS3000 and recommended HCS3010
Application fee: no cost
Application deadline: Students can apply at any time however those that are starting in the summer must contact Mrs. Bondarchuk by June 1st.
Students must have a workplace in mind for a RAP placement, or they can choose one that is advertised through Careers Next Generation. Student applications are sent to Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training, who approves the apprenticeship.

Application Fee: None
Application deadline: On going, but student must test within one year of registration
If students live on a farm or work on a farm, they can receive credit in cow-calf, dairy, feedlot, sheep, swine, equine, field crop, irrigated crops, and beekeeping. Students can complete more than one Green Certificate.
