Bringing 36 players is an incredible turnout—that’s a huge testament to the school’s commitment to inclusion and the Unified Sports program.
The North Central Zone Unified Sports is a key event in the School Sport Alberta (SSA) and Special Olympics Alberta calendar. Hosted at Morinville Community High School, it brings together student-athletes with intellectual disabilities and their “unified partners” (students without disabilities) to compete as teammates.
It is truly impressive to see how the North Central Zone Unified Sports has grown. With 11 schools and 150 participants gathering in Morinville, it’s clear that Unified Sports is becoming a massive part of the high school culture in the region.
Having Barrhead Composite (BCHS) represent nearly 25% of the total participants (36 out of 150) is a major statement. It shows that BCHS isn’t just “participating”—they are likely a cornerstone of the program in the North Central zone.
With that many people in the gym, the atmosphere for 3×3 Basketball and Cornhole must have been electric:
- 3×3 Basketball: With 150 participants, there were likely dozens of teams rotating through the courts. This format is perfect for the games because it keeps everyone moving and allows schools like Barrhead to field several balanced rosters.
- Cornhole: This has become the “bridge” event of Unified Sports. It allows athletes who might not prefer the high-impact nature of basketball to still compete at a high level, focusing on precision and teamwork.
150 students eating lunch together, cheering for other schools, and competing as equals is exactly what the “Unified” mission is about.
